Es ist wieder Kräuterzeit!/It's Herb Time Again!

Na, wer hätte gedacht, dass der Sommer meine liebste Jahreszeit ist (solange bis der Winter wieder kommt ;-)). Da kann man wieder jede Menge Kräuter draußen finden. Aber beim Sammeln bitte immer dran denken: nur soviel nehmen, wie man wirklich braucht, damit man auch im nächsten Jahr wieder sammeln kann.

Can you guess that summer is my fav time of the year (as long as winter isn't here again ;-)). There are lots of herbs to gather outdoors. And always think about only taking as much as you really need, so you can gather the next years, too.

Eines meiner Lieblingskräuter ist die Kamille (Matricaria chamomilla). Die Anwendungen sind sehr vielseitig: Kamille wirkt gegen Bakterien und Entzündungen, gegen Magenbeschwerden und als sanftes Beruhigungsmittel und ist ebenfalls in vielen Kosmetika zu finden. Ein Aufguß mit heißem Wasser ergibt einen schmackhaften Abendtee oder kann als Spülung für blondes Haar, eine Gesichtsreinigung oder als Färbemittel für Stoff verwendet werden.

Und hier noch einige weitere Kräuter, die ich gesammelt habe. Links ein kleines Bündel mit Spitzwegerich (Plantago lanceolata), der of in Tees verwendet wird und besonders gut gegen Husten hilft. Rechts in der blauen Schüssel ist Salbei (Salvia officinalis), der ein leckeres Küchenkraut ist, vor allem in gemischten Salaten und zu Kalbfleisch. Als Tee hilft er gegen Halsweh und gegen übermäßiges Schwitzen. Oben seht ihr Pfefferminze (Mentha x piperita), die man im Sommer als tollen Erfrischungstee kalt oder warm genießen kann und der ebenfalls gegen Erkältung hilft und wenn man zuviel gegessen hat. Eine Mischung aus Kamille und Minze eignet sich sehr gut als Abendtee. Unten im Bild seht ihr Zitronenmelisse (Melissa officinalis). Melisse wirkt beruhigend und krampflösend, antibakteriell und antiviral. Ich verwende die Blättchen oft als Dekoration auf Desserts oder Kuchen.

Here are some more herbs I gathered. On the left you can see a bundle of ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata). It is often found in teas and used a cough medicine. On the right in the blue bowl you can see some salvia (Salvia officinalis), which is an tasty cooking herb, for example in mixed salads or with veal. As a tea it helps against a sore throat and too much sweating. On top there is some peppermint (Mentha x piperita), which makes an excellent refreshing summer tea, drunk cold and warm, and is good when having a cold or eaten too much. A blend of chamomile and peppermint also tastes very fine and is a perfect evening tea. At the bottom finally there is some lemon balm (Melissa officinalis). It is used as a calming agent and is also antibacterial and antiviral. In cooking I often use it for decorating desserts or cakes.

Erinnert ihr euch an den Prototyp der Abstützhilfe für meinen Compoundbogen? Nun ist die Kurzversion für meine Freundin endlich fertig geworden und ich konnte sie ihr noch vor ihrem Urlaub geben.

Remember the prototype of the compound holster I made for myself? Now I finally finished the short version for my friend, so I could give it to her before she's out for the holidays.

Verwendet habe ich dafür 3mm Blankleder, dass ich mit Antikfinish und Lederfinish behandelt habe. Die Farbe ist fantastisch! Man glaubt gar nicht, dass es dasselbe Leder ist wie bei meiner Abstützhilfe. Als Dekoration hatte sie sich einen Wolf gewünscht.

I used 3 mm sleek leather, that I treated with antique finish and leather finish. The color is gorgeous! One wouldn't believe that it is the same leather than I used for my own holster. For the decoration she wanted a wolf.

Echo Creative Club im Mai/in May

Endlich ist es wieder soweit!

Dieses Mal habe ich mir selbst ein ziemliches Ei gelegt, was die Auswahl meiner FIMO-Perle von Jeannie angeht: eine Gin Blossom mit sechs Löchern. Am Anfang dachte ich, ich mache irgendwas mit Rocailles und verziere die Blüte mit Perlchen. Aber dann hat mich vor ca. einem Monat mal wieder der ,,Lederwahn" angefallen. Und hier ist nun mein Werk: mein Stachelblumen-Steampunk-Wasweißich-Armband:

This time I got myself into trouble with ordering my polymer clay artbead from Jeannie: a six-hole Gin Blossom. First I thought about embellishing the blossom with seedbeads and some beadweaving. But then, about a month ago, the "leather madness" hit again. And here is now what I call my Spikey Flower Steampunk Don't Know What It Is Cuff:

Für die Basis und die kleinen Blümchen habe ich Lederreste verwendet, für die Blümchen habe ich sogar zur Gin Blossom passendes Wildleder gefunden. Das Lederband habe ich mit Leder-Antikfinish behandelt, um es alt wirken zu lassen. Die Designelemente habe ich mit Lederkordel and der Basis befestigt ebenso den Blumen-Knopf, den ich in meiner Knopfschachtel gefunden habe. Dann habe ich das Leder noch mit Blumen und Blättern geprägt und die Prägungen und auch den Rand noch mit roter Lederfarbe behandelt, um den Antikeffekt noch zu verstärken und die Verzierungen hervortreten zu lassen.

I used leather scraps to make the cuff base and the little flowers, I even found some suede in the same color than the Gin Blossom. The cuff base is treated with antique leather finish to give it a used look. I used leather cord to tie the design elements to the cuff base, also the flower button I found in my stash. I stamped the leather with leaf and flower motifs and added red leather color to them and also to the edge to give the cuff an even more used look and make the stamps pop out from the background.

Kleine Stickerei/Little Embroidery

So, ich glaube, der Sommer kommt. Mein Urlaub ist zwar erstmal (leider) vorbei, aber mit dieser kleinen Stickerei muss man doch gleich an einen schönen Sommerurlaub am Meer denken. Sie ziert nun ein Leinengeschirrtuch und ich habe sie mit einfädigem Sticktwist gestickt. Sehr klein also.

I think summer is coming. My holidays are (sadly) over now, but with this little embroidery I have to think of summer holidays by the sea at once. I embellished a linen dish towel and stitched it with a single thread of embroidery floss. So the ships are very small.

Harter Kampf: Byzantine/Hard Fight: Byzantine

Nun komme ich endlich mal dazu, euch dieses tolle Schmuckstück auch hier auf meinem Blog vorzustellen. Beadingdaily-Leser konnten das Teil ja schon im Februar bewundern. 522 handgedrehte und handgeschnittene Ringe, 30 Lapisperlen in A-Qualität und Arbeit bis vier Uhr morgens, aber auf diese Kette bin ich sehr stolz. Das Design ist aus einem von Scott David Plumlees Büchern und nennt sich Beaded Crown Design, welches auf der Byzantine-Kette aufbaut. Ich habe versilberten 1mm-Draht verwendet.

Finally I found the time to show you this beautiful piece of jewelry here on my blog, too. I already posted this in February for the Beadingdaily readers in the forums. 522 handcoiled, handcut rings, 30 A-grade lapis beads and work until 4 am, but I am so proud of this choker. The design is from a book of Scott David Plumlee and is called Beaded Crown Design, which is based on Byzantine Chain. I used 1mm silverplated wire.

Küchengardine/Kitchen Curtain

Hier ist meine neue Küchengardine. Nachdem Plan A nicht hingehauen hat, weil sich der Stoff nicht mit der Nähmaschine verstanden hat, mußte ich Plan B auspacken und statt nur der Borte unten das ganze Gardinchen häkeln. Aber sie ist schick geworden, finde ich.

Here's my new kitchen curtain. After plan A failed because the fabric didn't cooperate with my sewing machine, I had to pull out plan B and crochet the whole curtain instead of only the bottom lace. But I think it turned out so nice.

Immerhin hat die Borte unten, die ich ja schon gehäkelt hatte, so gepasst, dass ich ohne tricksen mit dem Filetmuster anfangen konnte.

At least the bottom lace, I already had crocheted, matched the filet pattern without making any changes.

Lederverarbeitung: Automatische Ahle/Leathercrafting: Automatic Awl

Ich habe mir wieder mal ein paar Lederwerkzeuge bestellt, um mir die Lederverarbeitung etwas zu erleichtern und die Produkte etwas professioneller aussehen zu lassen, vor allem was Nähte und Kanten angeht. Das erste nette ,,Spielzeug", das ich heute morgen ausprobiert habe, ist eine Näh-Ahle, auch automatische Ahle genannt. Mit diesem Werkzeug kann man sehr einfach eine sogenannte Sattlernaht herstellen. Trainingsobjekt war ein Mäppchen für meine Papiere wie Führerschein, Fahrzeugschein etc. Natürlich wieder mit meinem verärgerten Bärchen. ;-)

I bought myself some leathercrafting tools to make it easier for me and make the products look more professional, especially the seams and edges. The first nice "toy" I tried this morning while making a leather case for my papers like driver's licence etc., was a sewing awl, also called an automatic awl. This kind of awl is designed for leathercrafting and sewing with two threads. Together with some additional little helpers the seam and the outcome look so good. I'll show you more of them tomorrow. And of course there had to be my little angry bear on the leather case. ;-)

Paint Party Friday: Kleine Zeichnungen/Little Sketches

In letzter zeichne ich nicht wirklich viel, nur einige kleinere Verzierungen für meine Lederarbeiten, die sich dann auf Köchern und Taschen wiederfinden.

I do not draw a lot lately but work a lot with leather and did some quick sketches for decoration on those leather items like quivers and bags.

Ein Uhu: ich mag seinen Blick! Die Augen habe ich auf dem Lederköcher noch orange angemalt./An eagle owl: love his eyes! I painted his eyes orange on the quiver he is now on.

Tatzen reloaded: Die sind schon auf meinem Rückenköcher und nun auch auf einem kleinen Köcher für meine Bogenkids. Ich mag sie immer noch./Those are already on my back quiver and now on a small side quiver for my archery kids. I still like them.

Wölfe zeichnen muss ich noch ein bisschen üben./I still got to practice drawing wolves.

Echo Creative Club Mai/May

So, hier ist nun endlich mein Post mit dem zu verarbeitenden Anhänger für die Mai-Ausgabe des Echo Creative Club: eine Gin Blossom mit sechs Löchern. Keine Ahnung, was ich damit machen soll, aber ich habe sie gewollt und nun muss ich damit leben.

Now finally here is my piece I got for the Echo Creative Club round due on May 25th. It is a six-hole Gin Blossom and still I have no clue what to do with it. But I asked for it and now I have to deal with it. :-)

Montagsmaler Nr. 18: Malen mit Hitze/Painting with Heat

In letzter Zeit benutze ich zum Malen und Zeichnen keine Stifte mehr, sondern eher einen Lötkolben. Ich arbeite gerade, neben Garn zum Häkeln, sehr viel mit Leder. Unter anderem mache ich für meine Bogenkids eine ganze Reihe Köcher, die sich die Kids zum Training beim Verein ausleihen können. Gut, man hätte sie ganz schlicht halten können, aber warum nicht welche machen, die unverwechselbar sind und die die Kinder gerne benutzen.

Lately I'm not painting with pencils and crayons, but with heat. I'm working a lot with leather atm, besides my crochet yarn and hook. My archery kids needed some arrow quivers they can borrow from the club for archery practice. OK, I could have done the quivers simple without any decoration, but why not make them special and distinctive, so the kids love to use them.

Abstützhilfe für Compoundbögen/Compound Bow Holster

Eine Freundin hat mich gefragt, ob ich ihr eine Abstützhilfe für ihren Compoundbogen machen könnte. Diese Teile gibt es natürlich zu kaufen und man befestigt sie am Gürtel, um den Bogenarm während des Schießens zu entlasten. Das Problem ist nur, dass meine Freundin sehr klein ist und die handelsüblichen Abstützhilfen einfach zu lang für sie sind. Der Bogen sitzt dann auf Höhe ihres Knies anstatt auf dem Oberschenkel. Also habe ich diesen Prototyp gebastelt und wir konnten ungefähr abschätzen, welche Länge sie braucht.

A friend of mine asked me if I can make her a compound bow holster that she can put on her belt to relax the bow arm while shooting. Those holsters are available at archery shops, but the problem is that my friend is a very small woman and the standard holsters are too long for her. The bow then sits on her knee instead of her thigh. So I built this prototype as I also needed one and we now determined the length she needs.

Schneeflocken im Frühling/Snowflakes in Spring

Nein, ich erlebe gerade keine späten Wintereinbruch, auch wenn die Eisheiligen vor der Tür stehen. Ich habe nur mal in meinem Riesenvorrat an unfertigen Objekten gekramt und bei diesen gehäkelten Schneeflocken hier waren nur noch jeweils zwei Fäden zu vernähen, dann noch spannen, anfeuchten trocknen lassen et voilà: eine perfekte Winterdeko fürs Fenster! Aufgepasst, denn da kommt noch mehr Häkeldeko.

No, I'm not having a late winter onset with snow and freezing cold. I just went through my stash of unfinished objects and found these crcoehted snowflakes. There were only two threads each to sew up, so I did that. Then pinning them to my ironing board, soak them with water, let them dry et voilà: Perfect window decoration for winter! Watch out for more crocheted decoration to come.
